Data Observatory
The Mental Health Data Observatory
A fuller picture of community mental health across England and Wales.
Community mental health is much bigger than the activity recorded in NHS datasets. Charities, social enterprises, mental health social care providers, housing organisations, helplines, peer networks, advocacy services, and specialist providers support millions of people, yet much of that work is fragmented across different data sources or missing altogether.
The Mental Health Data Observatory brings together information about services, communities, workforce, population need, inequalities, and geography so users can understand where support exists, how areas differ, and where there may be gaps that need a closer look.
It is not a service finder for people seeking immediate support. It is designed for members, commissioners, policymakers, researchers, funders, and partners who need stronger evidence for planning, advocacy, investment, and collaboration.
Use data with local knowledge
No dataset can explain a place on its own. Observatory information should be used alongside provider knowledge, lived experience, and an understanding of local commissioning and community context.
