Statement to Announce Kathy’s Retirement

After more than 13 years of dedicated leadership for mental health charities as CEO of the Association of Mental Health Providers and over 40 years working in health and social care, Kathy Roberts MBE has announced her intention to retire this summer.

Kathy has been a tireless champion for the mental health sector, significantly expanding the Association’s membership base, strengthening its services, and deepening its influence with government and national partners. Under her leadership, the Association has become widely recognised as the definitive national voice for the VCSE mental health sector in England. Her ability to create and sustain meaningful partnerships, advocate for progressive policy changes, and increase the visibility of mental health service providers has left an indelible mark on the sector.

Kathy’s commitment and dedication have inspired countless colleagues and stakeholders across the sector. She has been a vocal advocate for inclusivity, personalisation, and tackling inequalities in mental health care and support. Her ability to navigate complex policy environments while maintaining a deep empathy for the people and communities affected by mental health needs has set her apart as a truly exceptional leader.

Kathy said:

“I am sad to be leaving the Association, but I am confident that I am doing so at a time when its status and standing in the sector has never been higher. I also know that I leave behind a strong and values-driven Executive team who will, with the support of an equally strong and values-driven board of trustees, continue to promote the needs of and advocate for a better understanding of the critical role played by mental health service provider charities in supporting over of the eight million people each year.”

The Association’s independent chair of trustees, Steve Appleton, said:

“Kathy’s leadership of the Association, and by extension, the mental health sector, is acknowledged by all as having been instrumental in raising the status of not only the charities that support those with mental health problems but also the importance of mental health policy and practice. She has ensured a focus on the principles of inclusion, personalisation, and the need to address inequalities in access to services. She will be deeply missed by her colleagues and friends at the Association and in the wider mental health sector. However, her legacy is a strong and lasting one, providing a firm foundation from which the Association will continue to support and advocate for the VCSE mental health sector and, most importantly, for the people and communities who rely on its services.”

Dania Hanif, Director of Policy and Programmes, has been appointed as interim CEO, effective from 1 June, bringing a wealth of expertise and a deep commitment to the sector. With her extensive knowledge and strategic vision, she is well-positioned to drive the Association forward and build upon the strong foundation established under Kathy’s leadership.
