Webinar – Older Adults, Mental Health and Prevention
This webinar, with Alice Roe from Age UK, will provide a short overview of the issues affecting older adults with depression not accessing mental health services.
Mental health and emotional wellbeing are as important in older age as at any other time of life. However, there have been historic inequalities in older people’s access to mental health services. Mental health problems in older adults are far less likely to be detected or treated than in younger adults. Mental health conditions are serious in older people: they have a negative impact on a person’s quality of life and wellbeing, reduce independence and the ability to manage other long-term conditions, increasing use of health and care services.
Misdiagnosis, stigma and discrimination in society and the health and care system mean that many older people do not currently access the mental health support they need. Mental health and emotional wellbeing are as important in older age as at any other time of life. However, there have been historic inequalities in older people’s access to mental health services.
Please note the focus will be on depression and anxiety and ‘older adult’ is defined as a person over 65 years of age.
Age UK is the country’s largest charity dedicated to helping everyone make the most of later life. The Age UK network comprises around 130 local Age UKs reaching most of England.
