Welcoming our New Chair – Steve Appleton
The Association of Mental Health Providers, the only national representative organisation for mental health charities (VCSE) providing services, is pleased to announce the appointment of Steve Appleton as its new Independent Chair.
Steve brings a wealth of knowledge and experience in the mental health sector, and his leadership will be instrumental in guiding the charity through its next phase of growth and impact.
With an impressive track record in strategy, policy, applied research and the development of population-based initiatives, Steve has demonstrated a deep commitment to mental health and The Association, and has been a dedicated advocate for the sector. His extensive background and innovative approach will be invaluable as The Association continues to advance its mission to provide critical support, resources, and advocacy for the VCSE mental health provider sector.
Speaking about the appointment, the Chair of the recruitment committee and panel, Mark Winstanley said: “Having been an Independent Trustee for several years and a close partner of The Association before that, Steve has the knowledge and expertise of our work and the sector that is needed for the role, and his background will undoubtedly bring fresh perspectives and valuable contributions. The panel is confident that Steve will continue to build on the organisation’s successes during his term and we look forward to working closely with him through the next stage of our development.”
“I am deeply honoured to accept the role of Chair for the Association of Mental Health Providers,” said Steve Appleton. “Over the years, as an Independent Trustee, I have observed and been part of The Association’s valuable work representing the VCSE sector. The Association has played a central role in advocating for the sector and as we transition through a new phase with a newly elected government, that work has never been more needed. I am committed to leading our Board and organisation in support of our dedicated team and advocating for the sector, building on the solid foundations that have been laid.”
Steve currently serves as President and Chief Executive of Global Leadership Exchange, an international non-profit organisation that connects leaders in mental health, disability and substance use and promotes knowledge exchange to aid rapid improvements in service approaches and system leadership.
Prior to his role with GLE, Steve was Managing Director of a consultancy and research practice specialising in work relating to mental health, housing, disability and older age.
Steve originally trained as a social worker and has held operational and strategic management roles in local government and the NHS. He is also the author of a range of UK national guidance and best practice and has played a leading role in population-based mental health initiatives in cities across the UK and beyond.
“We are thrilled to welcome Steve Appleton as our new Chair,” commented Kathy Roberts, CEO of The Association. “Steve’s exceptional skills and profound understanding of the mental health landscape will be crucial in driving our strategic initiatives and expanding our reach. We are confident that under his leadership, The Association will continue to flourish, build on its achievements, and make a significant difference to the sector we represent and the people they support.”
Kathy and the Board thank Dr. Sri Kalidindi, as outgoing Chair, who has been a dedicated and compassionate leader during her term. In the last three years, The Association continued to see tremendous growth and success. The Board and staff extend their deepest gratitude to Sri for her unwavering commitment and invaluable contributions to the organisation.
