Islamophobia and Mental Health Webinar
Chaired by Steve Appleton, the Association’s Independent Chair and Chief Executive of Global Leadership Exchange. Featuring an expert panel: Maaria Mahmood (Director of Muslim Youth Helpline), Stephen Abdullah May (Founder of The Lateef Project), Abdirahim Hassan (Director of Coffee Afrik), and Sabah Gillani (Chief Executive of Muslim Mind Collaborative).
In honour of Islamophobia Awareness Month, our webinar focused on the theme “Seeds for Change”, emphasising how small, meaningful actions can drive positive societal shifts. Against a backdrop of rising Islamophobic incidents in the UK, including fascist-led riots targeting Muslim communities, the event addressed the increasing mental health challenges communities face. Experts from the mental health sector shared insights on how to better support Muslim communities impacted by Islamophobia, discussed evidence-based, culturally specific therapeutic approaches, and explored community-driven strategies for resilience and recovery. The webinar also highlighted concrete actions to support mental health professionals working with affected communities.
